Are you struggling to make contact consistently? Looking to transform your batting average from good to great? The difference between a .250 and .350 softball hitter often comes down to dedicated practice with the right drills. At our Revolution Softball Camps, we help players dramatically boost their batting average with proven techniques/drills.

Here are three batting drills that will help you improve in the batter’s box!

Batting Drills to Improve your Softball Game

The Tee Progression Drill

This drill helps develop consistent contact and proper swing mechanics—essential components for boosting your batting average.

  1. Set up a tee at knee height, positioned slightly forward in your stance
  2. Take 10 swings focusing on hitting the bottom half of the ball
  3. Move the tee to mid-thigh height and take 10 more swings
  4. Finally, position the tee at belly-button height for 10 swings
  5. Throughout each set, focus on maintaining the same swing path and follow-through

Record your swings or have a partner watch for consistent mechanics across all three heights. Adjusting to different pitch locations while maintaining your swing integrity is crucial for improving as a hitter.

The Rapid-Fire Soft Toss Drill

This will enhance your hand-eye coordination and quicken your bat speed—two critical factors for consistent hitting.

  1. Have a partner kneel about 5-6 feet away, perpendicular to your stance
  2. Your partner should toss softballs underhand toward your front hip
  3. Begin with 10-second intervals between tosses
  4. Gradually decrease the time between tosses to 5, then 3, then 1 second
  5. Complete 3 sets of 15 tosses with a 30-second rest between sets

Focus on quick hands and compact swings. This drill forces you to make split-second decisions—just like in a real game situation where recognizing pitch type quickly can dramatically boost your batting average.

The Inside-Outside Pitch Drill

Many hitters struggle with adjusting to different pitch locations. This drill helps you develop the versatility needed to hit any pitch effectively.

  1. Set up with a partner or coach who can throw from about 20 feet away
  2. Have them alternate between inside and outside pitches randomly
  3. For inside pitches, focus on turning your hips quickly and keeping your hands inside the ball
  4. For outside pitches, work on staying back and driving the ball to the opposite field
  5. Complete 20 total pitches, keeping track of solid contact

Don’t try to pull everything. Learning to hit the outside pitch to the opposite field and pull the inside pitch will make you a more complete hitter and significantly boost your batting average against all types of pitchers.
