About Our Coaches

Joe French

UMBC's Revolution Softball Camp will be directed by Head Softball Coach Joe French. Joe has been a mentor at every level, including junior college, D-I, D-II, and D-III.

In 18 years as a head softball coach on the college level, Joe has an impressive record of 541-354-1 with a winning percentage of .605. He has averaged almost 33 wins per season in his 10 years at UMBC, including three campaigns of 40 or more victories, and he ranks in the NCAA's top 50 for Division 1 coaching wins.

French came to UMBC, his first Division I head coaching job, before the 2002 season, and he immediately led the Retrievers to their second-ever NCAA berth and a school-record 47 wins. The Retrievers defeated Bethune-Cookman in the NCAA play-in series for their first victory in an NCAA Tournament game in school history, and they also won a game in the NCAA Regionals with a 7-1 triumph over Liberty. In 2003, French’s Retrievers were Northeast Conference regular-season co-champions.

In French’s first two seasons at UMBC, his teams were 37-7 in Northeast Conference games. With a 40-22 record in 2003, the Retrievers posted back-to-back 40-win seasons for the first time in school history. In 2006 UMBC won 46 games – the second-most in school history – and advanced to its first-ever America East Championships.

A strong recruiter, French is his own recruiting coordinator and has a keen eye for talent, as he looks for strong athletes on the field who are also strong students in the classroom. Over the past 29 years, French's softball and basketball teams have been ranked both regionally and nationally. In addition, his players have received All-America, All-Region, All-ECAC and All-Conference honors. In addition to his work at UMBC, French has worked at a wide range of camps including the Virginia Legends Showcase in Virginia Beach, Va., the Tuff and Tougher Clinic and Showcase and the Home-run Softball Clinic and Showcase.

Thanks Revolution Softball Camps for putting on such a great camp. Your staff was so friendly and professional. My kids came home better players and are already looking forward to coming back next year.

The UMBC camp was a great experience for our daughter. The coaches made her get out of her comfort zone and push herself more that usual. I can already see that mindset translating to her play on the field.

I had never been to a sleepaway camp before and staying in the dorms was so cool. I made a lot of friends at camp this summer and I can't wait to come back next year.
